What is a Math Circle? Teachers provide a complex open math problem for students to solve at their own level, during which time they can use multiple strategies to solve such a problem and find different solutions. They might define their own math problems, observe patterns, and test solutions. In short, they are showing mathematical research skills. Often they find different approaches and strategies to tackle the same problem. They can get to so called "aha"moments.
At their Level Math Circle problems can be in line with the current curriculum, or focus on a new topic. Students will however participate at their own level.
Advanced/Gifted Learners Math Circle can be just the challenge kindergartners advanced in math need in order to continue to love math!
International Math Circle Math Circle started in East Europe and entered the US with the emigrants. In the US, Math Circle events are organized for young children and elementary, middle and high school age students in schools and afterschool programs, and for teachers.
Experience I learned about Math Circle in the US while teaching at a school for gifted children. At this school, I taught English and PBL to 1st & 2nd graders, and Math at the 6th grade level to 3rd-6th grade students. All incoming teachers were schooled in Math Circle before teaching math. The whole school provided Math Circle on Fridays at 10 am.
