When selected to teach math and English at a K-6 school for gifted students, I learned how giftedness, visual spatial learning and sensitivity pertained to me.
Apparently, I had personal experience. While I was in 6th grade, I participated in a gifted pull-out class. I’ve dropped out into a lower level school during my first bachelor program, because of not knowing how to learn and needing another type of instruction. This all because of a combination of giftedness and being a partial visual spatial learner. English was not my strongest suit in high school, and I received my share of support in English till I learned how to tutor dyslectic students in English.
With my Dutch Ba in Ed, and an American MA in Early Childhood Special Education, I’ve enjoyed teaching in different settings before I started my independent Gifted and Talented Specialist practice. I’ve taught PBL & English to 1st and 2nd graders, and 6th grade math (including Math Circle) at a gifted K-8 school, as well as Dutch to first and multi-language K-1 learners and in other multi grade classes. I've also worked as a substitute teacher in an English preschool and in their Positive Discipline K-5 school. Furthermore, I worked as an independent tutor (math, reading & spelling, and handwriting), and as a Developmental Specialist and Trainer & Consultant in Early Childhood Special Education. I provided healthy baby and toddler clinics as a Public Health Nurse and worked as an advice nurse in a medical day care center for young children.
Once back in the Netherlands, I wanted to understand how the approach and support for (possibly) gifted children is organised in the Netherlands. So, I studied at WijsSein and Cedin-Novilo to become a Gifted and Talent Specialist, and visited and participated in different schools and other settings.
I've coached teachers who worked with an advance learner at an International school in the Netherlands, and am available to provide coaching or workshops to other international schools in The Netherlands.
